Motion of a drop driven by substrate vibrations

چکیده
We report an experimental study of liquid drops moving against gravity, when placed on a vertically vibrating inclined plate, which is partially wet by the drop. Frequency of vibrations ranges from 30 to 200Hz, and above a threshold in vibration acceleration, drops experience an upward motion. We attribute this surprising motion to the deformations of the drop, as a consequence of an up/down symmetry-breaking induced by the presence of the substrate. We relate the direction of motion to contact angle measurements.

Ratchetlike motion of a shaken drop.
We study the motion of a drop lying on a plate simultaneously submitted to horizontal and vertical harmonic vibrations. The two driving vibrations are adjusted to the same frequency, and, according to their relative amplitude and phase difference DeltaPhi, the drop experiences a controlled directed motion with a tunable velocity. We present a simple model putting in evidence the underlying mech...
متن کاملSelf-ratcheting Stokes drops driven by oblique vibrations.
We develop and analyze a minimal hydrodynamic model to understand why a drop climbs a smooth homogeneous incline that is harmonically vibrated at an angle different from the substrate normal [P. Brunet, J. Eggers, and R. D. Deegan, Phys. Rev. Lett. 99, 144501 (2007)]. We find that the vibration component orthogonal to the substrate induces a nonlinear (anharmonic) response in the drop shape. Th...
متن کاملVibration Analysis of an Air Compressor Based on a Hypocycloidal Mechanism: an Experimental Study
In this paper, the experimental vibration analysis of a single cylinder air compressor based on a hypocycloid straight line mechanism (HSM) is investigated. The HSM mechanism uses planetary gears to convert rotational motion to purely linear motion. In the conventional air compressor, the slider- crank mechanism is replaced by the HSM mechanism with appropriate counterweights. The constructed s...

متن کاملAxial and Torsional Free Vibrations of Elastic Nano-Beams by Stress-Driven Two-Phase Elasticity
Size-dependent longitudinal and torsional vibrations of nano-beams are examined by two-phase mixture integral elasticity. A new and efficient elastodynamic model is conceived by convexly combining the local phase with strain- and stress-driven purely nonlocal phases. The proposed stress-driven nonlocal integral mixture leads to well-posed structural problems for any value of the scale parameter...
